Every well-trained dog starts in the same place: with the basics. At One Shot Retrievers, basic obedience training gives your dog the foundation it needs to listen reliably, respond to your lead, and behave well in everyday situations — at home, on walks, and around other people and dogs.We keep our approach simple and consistent. Dogs learn best through clear communication, not repetition for its own sake, so every session is built around commands your dog can carry with them long after training ends.
Basic obedience covers the core commands every dog benefits from, regardless of age or breed:
These commands aren't taught in isolation. We focus on helping your dog generalize them, so "Sit" means the same thing in the yard as it does at the vet's office or on a busy sidewalk.
Why the Basics Matter
A dog that knows the basics is a dog that's easier to live with. Basic obedience reduces the everyday friction that frustrates owners — pulling on the leash, jumping on guests, ignoring commands when it matters most — and it builds the focus and trust that every other kind of training depends on.
It's also the groundwork for anything more advanced. Whether your dog is headed toward off-leash reliability, gun dog work, or simply needs to be a well-mannered companion, basic obedience is where that journey starts.
When to Start
We recommend starting as early as possible — many owners begin around 8 weeks of age, when puppies are especially receptive to learning. That said, basic obedience isn't only for puppies. Older dogs can build the same foundation with the same consistency; it may just take a bit more patience getting there
Once your dog has the basics down, advanced obedience training builds on that foundation with off-leash control, distraction-proofing, and more reliable recall in real-world settings. Some owners also move on to our Puppy Imprinting Program for younger dogs, or choose one-on-one training for a more individualized pace.
